Survival! Staying Calm in June.
So last year, a mum I worked with described the last 3 weeks of the school year “like running a marathon while juggling school requests and Aladdin notification attacks.”
Her 9 year old was refusing to go to school, and her teen was spiralling about approaching exams. Thankfully we made a plan, and, step by step, the family got through June.
This year, I want to get to you in advance, so that June is a little calmer for you than it was for her last year.
Tips:
-
Prioritise Nervous System Safety
Let go of “doing it all.” Identify the truly essential events and gently excuse or streamline your child from anything non-essential that triggers distress and overwhelm. Do a few things well, and enjoy them! -
Plan for Energy Dips
Prepare yourself for possible meltdowns and shutdowns. Pre-empt with “low demand” windows: less talking, simple food, early nights. -
Celebrate the Small Wins
Made it to school wearing the wrong socks? Win. Survived a loud assembly? Win. Keep your language strengths-based: “You did it, even though it was hard.”
I look forward to speaking with you at 4pm today for our LIVE, when we will be talking about using visual supports during June and for the summer.
Remember... you got this. You are doing a good job.
Kindest regards,
Your Child and Adolescent Psychologist,
Lorraine Xx
