Helping your family co-create rhythm this summer šŸŒž

To my wonderful Neurodiversity Parents,

Great work last week, so many great questions at the start and the end of our session. I am looking forward to hearing how things went for you during the week.

Afterwards, I was thinking that summer routines can feel like quicksand, too rigid, and everything collapses… too loose, and nothing holds.

I thought the questions about managing change were particularly thought provoking (especially the sibling ones), so let’s find the middle ground—together.

This week, I’d love you to explore structure vs flow through a whole-family lens, not just individual behaviours.

Here’s your toolkit:

šŸ’¬ Script: A Conversation Starter

ā€œI’ve noticed our days have felt a bit tricky lately. Some of us like plans, some of us like more space. What do you think your body and brain need to feel calm during the day?ā€
ā€œLet’s each share one thing that helps us feel settled, and one thing that’s been hard.ā€

This script invites your child into the process—validating their preferences while gently teaching self-awareness.

āœļø Exercise: The Family Flow Map

  1. Draw a simple chart with your children—3 columns:
What helps me feel calm | What stresses me out | What I need more/less of

  2. Do it for each family member (you too!).

  3. Highlight overlaps—and conflicts. Then create one small rhythm that honours everyone (e.g. a quiet hour, a shared check-in, or a visual plan for transitions).

⭐ Top Tip:

Don’t aim for the perfect routine - aim for a safe enough rhythm that meets the majority of needs most of the time. Flexibility is a form of structure when done with intention.

You’re doing powerful work, even when it feels messy.

Looking forward to seeing you in the LIVE session this week, where we’ll go deeper into:

  • Co-creating rhythms with your child

  • Navigating sibling differences

  • Managing parent guilt around ā€œnot getting it rightā€

With belief in your capacity,

Your Child and Adolescent Psychologist,

Lorraine Xx

The After-School Reset: Helping Your Child Regulate
Dear Neurodiversity Parent, School takes a huge toll on neurodivergent children. Many work twice as hard as their peers just to keep up with sensory demands, social rules, and constant transitions. By 3pm, their nervous system is exhausted.... Instead of launching straight into homework or questions, think of the after-school routine as a reset ritual—a bridge from the demands of school back in...
Morning Routines Neurodivergent Style: Setting Up for Success
Dear Neurodiversity Parent, This week we’re going deeper into mornings, because for many families this is where stress peaks. For neurodivergent children, routines are not just about time management - they are about nervous system safety. A neurotypical child may tolerate a quick rush or noisy kitchen. A neurodivergent child’s system can interpret that same environment as a threat, leading to s...
Anchoring Sensory Systems for Back-to-School šŸ§ šŸ’”
To my wonderful Neurodiversity Parents, September can feel like too much, too soon for sensitive nervous systems. A classroom is a sensory storm...noise, light, movement, social interactions- all layered on top of early mornings and new routines. What helps most is not ā€œmore coping skills,ā€ but nervous system anchors. Small, predictable inputs that bring steadiness before, during, and after the...
