Why after school feels so hard (and what helps

Dear EPT Parent,

Have you noticed how school days often end in tears, meltdowns, or silence? That’s because many neurodivergent children spend all day masking and holding it together. By the time they walk through the door, their nervous system is on overload.

The “afterschool crash” isn’t bad behaviour. It’s the body saying: I’ve used up all my energy, and I need to reset.

Here are three practical ways to help your child’s nervous and sensory system recover after school:

✨ Decompression first, talk later — a quiet snack or solo time before asking about the day.
✨ Movement release — jumping on the trampoline, swinging, or a quick bike ride to discharge stress hormones.
✨ Sensory calm — dimmed lights, favourite soft clothes, or calming music to help re-regulate.

The key? Don’t dive straight into homework, chores, or questions. Give space for the nervous system to rebalance, then your child will have more capacity for connection.

With warmth,

Your Child and Adolescent Educational Psychologist,
Lorraine Xx

P.S. In the Membership this week, I’ll be sharing a step-by-step after-school reset plan—so you know exactly how to support transitions without battles or overwhelm.

We Need Spaces That Build Us Up, Not Wear Us Down
I love the change in season - April is lovely! It always makes me pause and think about what I want more of… and what I need to step back from. And if I’m honest, I’ve been feeling something lately. Some of the spaces we turn to for support feel… they fell heavy to me.There’s a lot of negativity. A lot of noise. A lot of strong opinions. And not always a lot of hope or comradery. THIS is why mys...
Neurodivergent Strengths and Rewriting the Narrative
This week, I want to gently shift the lens. When we talk about neurodivergence, conversations can quickly centre around support needs, accommodations, overwhelm, or advocacy. Those things matter. But they are not the whole story. Neurodivergent children are not defined by their regulation challenges. They are often:Deeply perceptive.Exceptionally creative.Highly attuned to detail.Passionate abo...
Talking to My Neurodivergent Child About Neurodiversity
At some point, many of us face this question. How do we talk to our child about neurodiversity? Silence can create confusion.Over-explaining can create overwhelm. What matters most is tone. When neurodivergence is framed as difference rather than deficit, children feel relief. Relief that there is a reason.Relief that they are not broken.Relief that their experiences make sense. These conversat...
