Sorry - I was on holidays!

First off - sorry this email is landing in your inbox a little later than usual…
We’ve just come back from a family camping trip in France.

It was our happiest, most fun family holiday yet...

Normally I return from holidays a little frazzled from overtired kids (and adults!!🤣), cramped sleeping spaces, less alone time, different food routines… the works.

But this year it just felt different.

About halfway through our holiday, my husband said,
"Lor, I haven't seen you this chilled since we’ve had kids."
And honestly? He was right.

It got me thinking — what was different this time?
So I scribbled some notes down in a notebook under the fairy lights one evening, and I realised:

It wasn’t that the kids were calmer.
It wasn’t that everything went smoothly.
It was that myself and my husband stayed calm, organised, and connected to one another.

We talked about this and we came up with 5 things that we did to make this possible.

  1. We did lots of preparation
  2. We consciously empowered the children by involving them in decision - making.
  3. We brought some familiar items with us.
  4. We prioratised sleep and rest!
  5. We managed our expectations.

And I personally...

🌀 ... dropped the pressure to make it “perfect.”

🌀 ... protected little pockets of time for myself.

These small shifts created a huge nervous system win - for everyone.

I’ll be sharing more about what helped (and how to apply it in daily family life) inside the EPT Membership this week.

Passionate interests and different ways of communicating
Something I wanted to gently highlight this week is how often certain aspects of neurodivergence are misunderstood, particularly when it comes to communication and what are sometimes called “special interests.”   Many children, particularly autistic children, can have strong, passionate interests in particular topics. Sometimes these are seen as narrow or repetitive, but when you look m...
What do we actually mean by neurodiversity?
I wanted to introduce a word this week that can sometimes feel a little uncomfortable, and that is the idea of ableism.   And I want to approach it gently, because this isn’t about blame or getting things wrong. Ableism, at its core, is simply the set of assumptions we tend to carry about what is “typical” or “acceptable” when it comes to how people think, behave, learn, or communicate....
What do we actually mean by neurodiversity?
I’ve been thinking recently about how often the word neurodiversity comes up in conversation now, and how, while it’s becoming more familiar, I’m not always sure we’ve had the chance to slow down and really sit with what it means. So for the next few weeks, we will have Siobhan Campion, an autistic adhd advocate, and psychologist with EPT Clinic delivering key masterclasses and workshops...
