September is here…

Dear Neurodiversity Parent,

If you are like me, September can feel stressful, with lots of new drop offs and collections going into the calander, and the idea of early mornings causing defininite tention!

On top of this, there can be a lot of "hype". Shops filled with "back to school" signs, endless conversations about “back-to-school,” and social media lists of 101 things you should be doing right to get it right. It can feel like a lot of pressure.

The tricky thing is that, September does matter, transitions can be hard for our children, and a little preparation goes a long way. The trick is to prepare calmly, without falling into the hype.

Here are 3 gentle ways to begin:

1️⃣ Think in bite-sized steps. Instead of trying to overhaul routines, choose one small anchor to reintroduce (like a set bedtime or regular breakfast).

2️⃣ Gather the basics. Like we talked about last week, the basic foundations make a big difference. Make a short list of what really needs to be ready (uniform, bag, lunch box). Ignore the rest of the noise.

3️⃣ Keep it low-key. Children take their cues from us. If you stay calm and organised, it helps them feel safe and steady.

You don’t need to rush or get swept up in “back-to-school mania.” You just need steady steps, taken with you and your child in mind.

This week, in membership, let's talk about what we can do to be organised and calm this Septeber.

Next week in the membership, I’ll be sharing practical scripts and a toolkit to help you prepare your child emotionally for the transition, without overwhelm.

With warmth,

Your Child and Adolescent Psychologist,

Lorraine Xx

P.S. In the Membership this week, we will talk about this in more details.

Why after school feels so hard (and what helps
Dear EPT Parent, Have you noticed how school days often end in tears, meltdowns, or silence? That’s because many neurodivergent children spend all day masking and holding it together. By the time they walk through the door, their nervous system is on overload.   The “afterschool crash” isn’t bad behaviour. It’s the body saying: I’ve used up all my energy, and I need to reset.   Here are three p...
Morning routines without meltdowns: what really helps
Dear Neurodiversity Parent, For me, how I start the day makes a really big difference. I see this in many of the neurodivergent children (especially ADHDers) too. A good start makes a HUGE difference to the rest of the day. So with this min mine, I want to talk about the morning routine. The challenge is that morning routines are often painted as simple: get up, get dressed, eat breakfast, head...
Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater!
I've been busy over the summer spending lots of time with my kids, my family and other families too.  We've been on holidays to France, we've had lots of time at home, and I've had some time to think about what I am passionate about in regards to parenting.   In fact, my dad commented on it recently, and rightly asked "Do you share your thoughts about parenting that way in work?" It ma...
