Back-to-School and the Sensory Load 🎒
Dear EPT Parent,
Back-to-school doesn’t just mean uniforms and sharpened pencils...it means a whole new sensory load. I see this with the children I work with, and in my own house too.
For many neurodivergent children, September can feel like too much, too soon. Their nervous system is working overtime to manage noise, light, movement, and social demands. And when regulation is shaky, learning and connection become harder.
The good news? Small sensory strategies can make a big difference.
Here are some simple ideas to try:
🌿 Before school – a short movement break, a big hug, or a few minutes of carrying something heavy.
🎶 On the way – soft predictable sounds or a calming playlist.
👕 At school – comfy clothing, a chewable or fidget that’s acceptable in class.
👐 After school – a sensory “snack” like swinging or clay play, plus a calming ritual at home.
These aren’t extras....they’re essential anchors for your child’s nervous system. When their body feels safe and steady, they have more energy for joy, connection, and learning.
With warmth,
Your Child and Adolescent Psychologist,

✨ P.S. In the membership this week, I’ll be sharing a deeper dive into how families can create personalised sensory plans that reduce stress and smooth the transition back into routines.
